The email you're replying to

When you reply, Rookery puts the email you're answering under your words, the way Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail do. The person reading your reply sees what they asked, and anyone you add in Cc can follow along without forwarding.

What it looks like

Under your reply and your signature comes one line saying who wrote it and when, then their email, quoted:

The time is in your time zone, the way Rookery shows you times, as Gmail and Outlook do for whoever is replying. For a draft from Quill, it's the zone of the person who approved it. For an email no one sent by hand, it's the inbox owner's zone, or else the workspace owner's. Their mail app folds the quote away, as it does any reply.

  • Only the email you're answering is quoted: the newest one they sent before you replied, with whatever it quoted inside it.
  • Its pictures and formatting stay, cleaned the same way Rookery cleans everything you read: no scripts, no forms and no trackers. Their attachments aren't sent again.
  • A very long email is cut short, and the quote ends with "(trimmed)".
  • In your conversation, your reply shows only what you wrote. The quote is added as it goes out, so the thread doesn't get longer.

When it isn't included

Rookery leaves the quote out of:

  • Secure messages. The email only carries the link. Anything they wrote through a secure link or on their page stays there too.
  • Mail Scout is holding or flagged. A possible scam isn't copied into your reply. Once someone chooses It's safe, replies include it again.
  • A new email. There's nothing to quote yet.
  • Notes and drafts. Notes are only for your team, and a draft gets its quote when it's sent, like any reply.
  • Rookery's own automatic emails: document and approval requests, reminders, receipts, and calendar invites and booking emails.

Replies you approve from Quill, replies sent with Send later, and follow-ups include it, like any reply you write.

Copying someone new in

When you add someone in Cc who hasn't been in the conversation before, a quiet line under Cc says "They'll see the email you're replying to." Check that's fine before you send. If it isn't, remove them, or ask an owner or admin to turn the setting off for that inbox.

Turn it off for an inbox

  1. Open Settings, then Inboxes.
  2. Find the inbox, and switch off Include the email you're replying to.

It's on for every inbox to begin with. For a team inbox, owners and admins can change it. For a private inbox, only its owner can.
