Write on a phone

On a phone, Rookery gives your words the screen. This is how it works when you edit Rook's draft, and when you write a new email.

The line at the top

At the top there's Done, and one line that says who it goes to and where it goes from:

  • A reply: To Dana +1, and under it from Personal · Gmail when it goes through your Gmail. The +1 counts the people copied in.
  • A new email: the subject, and under it To Dana · from Personal. Before there's a subject it says No subject.

Tap the line to open it. Everything is there: who it goes to, with Cc and Bcc, the subject on a new email, and From. Your words stay right below it. Tap the line again, or tap in your words, and it folds back to one line.

Your words fill the width of the screen, and they're the only thing that scrolls. The formatting tools and Send sit on the keyboard while you type.

Done closes it. Your words are saved as you type, so it never asks.

A new email

An empty new email opens with the top line open, so To comes first. Type an address and tap Next (or Return) to go to Subject, then Next again to start writing. Once you're in your words, the line folds.

If you started from someone's page, To is filled already, so the line starts folded and you can start writing.

While something's missing, a light line under the top line says what, and what Send will do about it:

  • "Add who it's to and a subject. Send opens To first."
  • "Add who it's to. Send opens To."
  • "No subject yet. Send suggests one before it goes."

With nobody in To, Send opens the line at To. With no subject, it asks by Send: Add a subject? with one made from your first line. Use it and send sends it with that subject, and Change it opens the line at Subject.

When your words aren't saved

Nothing shows while saving works. When it doesn't, the line at the top says so, in yellow, until it's fixed:

  • Offline · kept on this phone: you're offline. Your words are kept on your phone, and they're saved once you're back.
  • Not saved · kept on this phone: you're online, but your latest changes haven't reached Rookery for a few seconds. They're kept on your phone. Open the line and tap Try again.
  • Not saved · keep this page open: your changes haven't reached Rookery, and this browser can't keep them either (for example, a private window, or one that blocks site data). Keep the page open, and tap Try again in the open line.

"Kept on this phone" shows only once your phone has really stored the words.
