# See what's new since you looked

Mail you haven't opened shows in bold with a dot. Mark a conversation as unread to come back to it. Only you see what you've read.

Getting started · Updated October 17, 2026 · https://userookery.com/help/unread/

Rookery shows you what changed, so you don't have to read every thread again.

## Bold until you open it

A conversation with an email you haven't opened shows in bold, with a small dot before the name. Open it, and it's plain again.

This is yours alone. When a teammate opens a conversation, it stays bold for you until you open it too.

The number beside each view still counts what's your turn, not what's unread. A conversation can be read and still need a reply.

## New since you last looked

Open a conversation you've read before, and a thin line marks where the new mail starts: **New since you last looked · 2**. The number says how many emails are new. Links that say **They replied** open right there.

The first time you open a conversation, there's no line. It's all new.

## Mark as unread

Want to come back to something later? Mark it as unread, and it's bold again.

- **In a conversation:** open the **⋯** menu at the top right, and pick **Mark as unread**.
- **In the list:** select one or more conversations, then pick **Mark as unread** in the bar at the top. When any of them is unread, the button says **Mark as read** instead.
- **With the keyboard:** press `⇧U` (Shift and U). In the list, it works on the row you're on, or on what you've selected.

Each one says what happened, with **Undo**. Press `z` to undo too.

After you mark the conversation you're reading as unread, it stays unread while you stay on it. It reads as usual once you move on. The next time you open it, it opens at the newest email, under the **New since you last looked** line.

## On your other devices

Open a conversation on your phone, and it's plain on your computer too. Mark it as unread on one, and it's bold on the others. This only happens for you.

## Who can see what you've read

Nobody but you.

- **Not the sender.** Rookery never sends read receipts, and nothing in an email tells it you opened it.
- **Not your teammates.** They never see what you've opened, and their lists don't change when you do.
- **Not the API, apps you connect, or exports.** What you've read stays in your own view of Rookery.
