# Fast pages, offline, and a shared computer

Rookery keeps a copy of the pages you open on your device, so they show at once next time and stay readable offline. On a shared computer, turn that off.

Getting started · Updated October 11, 2026 · https://userookery.com/help/this-device/

Rookery keeps a copy of the pages you open (your inbox views, Today, Kept, People, Documents, Calendar and the conversations you read) on the device you're using. The next time you go back to one, it shows at once, and Rookery checks with the server behind it. If anything changed, the page updates by itself a moment later.

## Without a connection

If your connection drops, Rookery keeps working for reading:

- A line at the top says **You're offline. Showing what you last saw.**
- Pages you've opened before still open, as they were when you last saw them. Rookery opens even if you close the tab and come back while offline.
- A page you haven't opened yet says it opens when you're back online.
- **Changes need a connection.** Done, snooze, a note or a reply tried offline changes nothing, and the line at the top says so. Try again when you're back. Nothing is ever sent from your device on its own.

When the connection comes back, the line goes away and pages catch up by themselves.

## What's kept, and who can read it

- **Only what you've opened**, and only what you're allowed to see. Someone else's private inbox is never on your device.
- **It's encrypted** with a key that stays in this browser and can't be copied out of it: both the pages' data and the copies that let Rookery open offline. A copy of the browser's files (a backup, another program) can't read it.
- **Signing out deletes it**, together with any drafts kept on this device. So does someone else signing in on the same browser.
- **When who can see an inbox changes** (an inbox is made private, or handed to someone else), every copy is thrown away and loaded again. If that happened while Rookery wasn't open here, it's done the next time Rookery opens with a connection.
- **Files and email you've opened** may be kept by the browser, but Rookery checks with the server each time you open them again, so one you've lost access to doesn't open.

## On a shared computer

On a computer other people use, like a library or a front desk, keep nothing on it:

1. Go to **Settings → Your account**.
2. Under **This device**, turn off **Keep a copy on this device**.

Pages then load from the server each time, nothing is written to the computer (files and email you open included), and Rookery doesn't open offline there. It's set for this browser only: your phone and laptop keep their own setting. Signing out when you're done still matters.
