# Ask someone for documents

Send a checklist of the documents you need, with a private upload link. Fetch checks each file and reminds them until it's all in.

Asking for documents by email usually means three emails and a wrong file. With a document request, the person gets one clear checklist and a private link to upload each item. Fetch does the chasing.

## Send a request

1. Open the conversation with the person.
2. Under the tags at the top, click **Request documents**.
3. Type the first document you need, like "Photo of the damaged item". Add **Details** if it helps.
4. Tick **Optional** for anything that's nice to have but not required.
5. Click **+ Add another document** for each extra item. You can ask for up to 20.
6. Pick a **Due by** date and write a **Message** if you like. Both are optional.
7. Click **Send request**.

The request goes out as a reply in the same conversation, with the usual 20-second undo.

## What they get

An email with your message, a link to upload, and a list of what you need. It tells them the link is private and they don't need an account.

## Follow along

The conversation shows each item and where it stands:

- **Waiting:** nothing yet
- **Checking:** Fetch is checking the file
- **Received:** the file looks right
- **Needs a new file:** the file wasn't right, and they've been told why

When every required item is in, the request is **Complete**.

## Good to know

- If a request is still open and you ask for more, the new items join the same checklist. They keep one link.
- When you reply while a request is open, you can tick **Include the upload link** to add it again.
- Quill can suggest documents to ask for in its drafts. Tick **Also ask for documents** to send them with the reply.
- Every file they upload is also kept in **Documents**.
- To stop a request, click **Cancel request**. This also stops the reminders.
- See [what they see on the upload page](https://userookery.com/help/upload-page/) and [how reminders work](https://userookery.com/help/document-reminders/).
