# Ask Rookery in a note with @Rookery

Type @Rookery in a note to ask a question, get a draft for your yes, or sum up the thread. It answers from what everyone there can see.

Getting started · Updated October 17, 2026 · https://userookery.com/help/mention-rookery/

Your team talks about a conversation in its internal notes. Rookery is part of that conversation: type `@Rookery` in a note and ask for what you need. It answers in the same note thread, as Rookery, where everyone on the conversation can see it.

## Ask Rookery in a note

1. Open a conversation and press `n`, or click **Add a note** at the end of the thread.
2. Type `@`. **Rookery** is in the list with your teammates, with its rook face. Pick it, or keep typing `@Rookery`.
3. Say what you want, then click **Add note** (or press `⌘Enter`).

For example:

- "`@Rookery` what did we promise them last time?"
- "`@Rookery` find their last invoice"
- "`@Rookery` draft a reply offering Tuesday"
- "`@Rookery` summarize this thread for Maya"

Rookery's answer appears as a note a few seconds later. The thread's updates say who asked and what Rookery did, like "Maya asked Rookery to draft a reply" and "Rookery drafted a reply for Maya's yes".

## What Rookery does with it

- **A question** is answered by [Ask Rookery](https://userookery.com/help/ask-rookery/), as you: from the mail, notes, files and calendars you can see. The answer lists its numbered sources under the note, and each opens the email, note or file it came from. "Them", "their" and "the customer" mean the person this conversation is with.
- **A draft request** gets a reply draft in the conversation. It always waits for a yes, even where Rookery may send on its own, and it never goes out by itself. You're the person on point for it, so it's your turn and in your **Needs your yes**. See [approve a draft](https://userookery.com/help/approve-a-draft/).
- **A summary** is a short note: what they want, what's been said or promised, and what's still open.

Rookery works out what you're asking from your words. When they don't say, it decides with a quick check, and treats anything still unclear as a question, which changes nothing.

## Who sees the answer

A note is read by everyone who can open the conversation, so Rookery answers only from what all of them can see.

- Anything from your [private inbox](https://userookery.com/help/private-inbox/), or from an inbox only some of them can open, stays out of the note. Rookery says "I found something in your private inbox; ask me in Ask Rookery to see it" instead. Ask it in **Ask Rookery** (`⌘K`) to see that answer, just for you.
- In your own private inbox, where only you read the notes, Rookery uses your private mail as Ask Rookery does.
- Each person sees only the sources they can still open. If someone loses an inbox later, its sources disappear from their view of the note.

## What Rookery won't do from a note

- **Send.** Ask it to send, and it drafts the reply for your yes instead, and says so.
- **Delete** anything, or **change settings or access.** It says who can.
- **Other changes**, like assigning, closing or tagging. Those are one tap for you; Rookery says what it can do instead.

## Good to know

- Each request counts towards your hourly limit for Ask Rookery. After a lot of requests in an hour, Rookery asks you to try again in a little while.
- Rookery doesn't answer in an inbox whose **Helpers and Ask Rookery may use this inbox** is off, or in the developer sandbox. It says so in the note.
- Questions need Ask Rookery to be on in your workspace. Drafts and summaries need Rookery's writing to be on in **Settings → Helpers**.
- A helper's own note never calls Rookery in, even if it quotes someone typing `@Rookery`. An [API key](https://userookery.com/help/api-keys/) can: a note it adds with `@Rookery` asks as the person who made the key.
- `@Quill`, the old name, still works the same way.
